The only two areas where students consistently outperformed the AI model were mathematics and economics. However, the gap between AI and human performance was notably narrower in questions requiring high levels of knowledge and cognitive processes.

Talal Rahwan and Yasir Zaki, computer science professors at NYUAD and leaders of the project, argued that traditional homework assignments might become obsolete in the face of AI. They stressed the urgent need for academic integrity policies to regulate the use of AI in education.
Furthermore, two AI text classifiers, OpenAI’s Text Classifier and GPTZero, struggled to identify AI-generated text in the research. This suggests that educators need to devise alternative solutions to integrate, rather than prevent, the use of AI tools in school work.
