However, the performance gap was smaller on questions that required a high level of knowledge and cognitive process, compared to those requiring intermediate levels.

It has since been making its mark in several disciplines including computer science, political studies, engineering, and psychology.

The Study

The research involved faculty members from 32 courses at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) who provided three student submissions each for 10 assessment questions. The same questions were posed to ChatGPT, which produced three sets of responses. These AI-generated and human-produced answers were then evaluated by three blind graders.

The results were astonishing. In 12 out of the 32 courses, ChatGPT’s answers were either on par or higher in quality than those of the students. The only two areas where students consistently outperformed the AI model were mathematics and economics. However, the gap between AI and human performance was notably narrower in questions requiring high levels of knowledge and cognitive processes.

The Functionality of ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a large language model that has been trained on a massive amount of text data. Using a machine learning technique known as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), it can generate text that is eerily human-like in response to a given prompt. This advanced AI can simulate dialogue, answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, and even challenge incorrect premises. It can be tasked to write essays, lyrics for songs, marketing pitches, and even poetry.

However, the AI model showed its limitations when it came to questions requiring creativity and when faced with trick questions, where it struggled to surpass students.

The Future of AI in Education

The rise of AI like ChatGPT poses several challenges for educational institutions. Talal Rahwan and Yasir Zaki, computer science professors at NYUAD and leaders of the project, argued that traditional homework assignments might become obsolete in the face of AI. They stressed the urgent need for academic integrity policies to regulate the use of AI in education.

Furthermore, two AI text classifiers, OpenAI’s Text Classifier and GPTZero, struggled to identify AI-generated text in the research. This suggests that educators need to devise alternative solutions to integrate, rather than prevent, the use of AI tools in school work.
